Weathering the Storm

High wind watch, flood warning, small craft advisory. Weather is always a topic of conversation in the Pacific Northwest, especially when there is a storm in the forecast. Saturday, December 6th the Columbia River Maritime Museum observes the first anniversary of the Great Coastal Gale of 2007 with an all day event entitled Weathering the Storm. This event has something for everyone. Come share your experiences! Admission is FREE with a donation of canned food for the Clatsop Emergency Food Bank.

Presentations include guest speakers discussing the December storm’s impact on the region by the National Weather Service, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer’s experiences assisting with evacuation in Chehalis, Washington and Pacific Power showing photographs of the devastation. Family programs offer children and their parents a variety of opportunities. Children can create their own weather game to take home and play with family members. Make a rope, send messages in Morse code, watch a puppet show, and participate in other special hands-on activities occurring during the event.

Ham radio operators will be on hand to explain their role in communications with the outside world during the storm. The Red Cross, Pacific Power, and the Astoria Fire Department will have displays and materials on disaster preparedness available for participants interested in learning more. Find out how electricity can zap you through a demonstration by Pacific Power. Entertainment by Astoria High School’s The Port City Singers, Astoria School of Ballet, Jennifer Goodenberger and others will be ongoing throughout the day. Scheduled events are from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

A complete schedule of events is posted at www.crmm.org or call Betsey Ellerbroek, Education Director, at 503-325-2323 for more information.
